Do-it yourself opportunities.
At SAVY we believe that you can turn any activity or hobby in to volunteering and we like to be challenged!
If you have any idea for a community project and would like to get it off the ground we are the people to help turn your idea in to action.
To date we have helped groups to perform over 2700 hours in the community by helping to create fun and innovative volunteer projects that meet your aims and aspirations. These are just a few examples of projects that we have supported during Summer 2010!
Roots, Shoots & Welly Boots Conservation Project at St Thomas’ Park
During the summer holidays young people aged 16-25 gave up their time to help on a conservation project at St Thomas’ Park. The park was picked as the location for our ‘Celebrating Volunteers’ Summer Fair, and as a thank you 6 young volunteers spent the afternoon in typical summer weather (gorgeous sunshine and torrential downpours!) to help create a new wilderness area and help to lay a new footpath, improving the park for those that use the space.
Beads, Bling and Sparkly Things
In August, 11 young people came together to spend the day
surrounded by all things glittery. The group learnt basic jewellery techniques including beading and metal work to produce several pieces of handmade jewellery, which we then donated to Stockport Womens Aid, a local charity who offer support, advice and accommodation to women and children that have been affected by domestic violence and abuse. In total approximately 50 pieces of jewellery were donated to Womens Aid including earrings, bracelets and necklaces which were received with thanks. (The young people also got to make something to take away with them to show off their newly developed skills!)
Animal Sanctuary Work Day For the final volunteering project this summer, 7 young people spent the day at Clough Farm Animal Sanctuary in Marple. A charity caring for a wide variety of animals including
pigs, chickens and ponies. Lots of the animals have special requirements which are specifically catered for and are there for many different reasons and through no fault of their own including neglect and abuse. The young people got a tour of the sanctuary including meeting two very large characters– Porgie and Bess, the resident pigs!
The volunteers then spent the remainder of the day sanding and staining the stable area which was a great help to the owners of the farm as they now have more time to dedicate to the animals that depend on them. The day was a great success with many of the volunteers wanting future projects at the sanctuary.
If your a young person with an idea or a group of young people that want to get involved- get in touch!
